Winter Olympics: Bjørgen wins Norway's first Gold

Norway's Marit Bjoergen on Wednesday won the women's 1.4km cross country sprint classic style convinsingly, capturing her country's first gold of the Games. Poland's Justyna Kowalczyk won silver.

Slovenia's Petra Majdic won bronze, an impressive achievement, following a serious fall earlier in the day. Afterwards she struggled through two qualifying rounds before finishing third.

Veteran skier Bjørgen, who has fought her way back to the top after a couple of difficult seasons, took the lead with about a third of the final left, and finished 1.1 seconds ahead of Kowalczyk. Bjoergen's gold was the first for Norway at the Vancouver Games.

On the men's side, Norway's Petter Northug, one of the cross country medal favourites, finished third in the Olympic men's 1.6 km cross country sprint classic.

Russia's Nikita Krijukov won the race, with compatriot Alexander Panzjinskij in second. The two took a comfortable lead from the start.
