Norway to host 2014 Chess Olympiad
Two cities had been bidding to host the event – Albena in Bulgaria and Tromsø in Norway. In the end the Norwegians won by a 95-47 vote margin. The World Chess Olympiad is one of the largest tournament in the world of sports, and it is expected that between 2500 and 3000 chess entusiasts will visit Tromsø during the event. The Norwegian coalition government has demonstrated its support for the Olympiad by beforehand pledging a financial backing of NOK 70 million (€ 8,8 million), out of a total budget of NOK 119.3 million (€ 15).
