More money for fighting piracy

The Norwegian government has granted NOK one million to the UN maritime organisation IMO, to be used on projects aimed at fighting piracy on the high seas and towards training of maritime personnel.

- It is very important to protect sailors in areas infested by pirates, says Trade Minister Trond Giske.

Around NOK 300,000 will be spent on work to improve maritime security in the straits of Malakka, between Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Anti-piracy measures in West Africa will also be supported by the funds.
