Winter holiday wet and mild

Many Norwegian families will head up to their cottage this weekend as the schools close next week for the Winter Holiday. However, many might end up spending more time indoors than on the slopes.

"Mild, wet and changeable" is the meteorologists’ forecast for the upcoming winter holiday week. Ideal for a night in, but if you want to go skiing you will need to get as high up in the mountains as possible, advices meteorologist Håkon Mjeldstad.

So far, the forecast shows that the eastern part of Norway will get the best weather, but there will still be a few rainy and grey days. "It looks like Oslo could get rain, but it might start out as snow," Mjeldstad explains.

The best conditions for skiing can currently be found in and around Trysil, one of Norway’s largest ski resorts. However, there will be strong winds and increased risk of avalanches, so the meteorologist advices people to exercise caution in the mountains.

Still, it won’t get much worse than if you’re out west, where people have a very wet week ahead of them. The western part of Norway will get very little sun, and lots of rain combined with strong winds. Luckily, the winter holiday doesn’t start out west until the end of February, which should hopefully give the rain and winds some time to subdue.
