WikiLeaks: The US unhappy with Norway
A number of letters from the US embassy in Oslo to US authorities reveal that the relationship between Norway and the US has been noticeably cooler than before, after the red/green coalition came to power in 2005, Aftenposten writes. The paper quotes from a letter from 2006, written by the then US ambassador to Oslo, Benson K. Whitney, which criticises Norway for launching the idea of a security dialogue with Iran, and for meeting with representatives for Hamas. There is also criticism of Norway's Middle East policy, as well as individual government ministers, among them Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. Støre says these documents do not reflect the true picture of the relationship between Norway and the US. - In my opinion the relations between Norway and the USA are based on friendship, alliance and long traditions. Such relations are able to tackle points of disagreement. - The fact that representatives for the Bush administration felt our views of conflicts were naive is something I can easily live with, because we did have a clear critical view of parts of the US military engagement, like Iraq and rocket shields, Støre says to Aftenposten.
