Tromsø - the World’s Top Cruise Destination

Frommer’s, one of the U.S. most popular travel guides and website, has named the city of Tromsø in Northern Norway the top cruise destination in the world.

"There is no better place to experience natural wilderness than to dock in Tromsø," according to the jury. The travel guide has put together a list of recommended destinations for 2012, which guides you to everything from the best beach experience to great food and wine.

Frommer’s lists the incredible wildlife, birds and landscape along the coastline as reasons for their choice, as well as the Northern Lights and the city’s "cool" vibe. "According to researchers, this year will offer the best Northern Lights in 50 years," the article explains.

"This is great news," Erik Joachimsen, the Daily Manager of Cruise Nord-Norge and Svalbard, told NRK. He thinks the spectacular landscape as well as high quality harbor services helped Tromsø reach the top of the list.

Tromsø is the largest city in the North of Norway, with a population of approximately 75,000, about 7,000 of which are students. This year, 92 cruise ships docked in the popular northern hub, and Hurtigruta, a popular Norwegian coastal cruise line, docks there twice daily.
