The permafrost is disappearingThe permafrost in Norwegian mountain areas is gradually disappearing, due to higher air temperatures and more snow. This will lead to more rock and mud slides, experts say. These findings were presented by climate researcher Ketil Isaksen of the Norwegian Meteorological Institute at the Third European Conference on Permafrost, held at Svalbard this week. - The first monitoring, carried out at the end of the 1990s, showed a ground temperature close to 0 degrees Celsius. Today, ten years later, tests show that the ground in these same areas is frost free, Isaksen says. The permafrost keeps the ground stable and firm. The spring meltwater will run off on top of the frozen ground. With the permafrost gone, the water will seep into the ground, making it more unstable. Isaksen believes this could result in more earth and rock slides in future. (NRK/Aftenposten) Written by Rolleiv Solholm Related ArticlesPotential strike in the public sector from Thursday
