The government delays climate report

The Norweian government has yet again postponed the presentation of this year’s climate report to Parliament, this time until June. Minister of Environment Erik Solheim (photo) is not happy.

Solheim, of the government coalition Socialist Left Party (SV) announced the delay, and while the Progress Party was pleased with the decision, the Labor Party’s youth group (AUF) urges the Labor Party to not break the Climate Agreement.

The climate report has already been delayed multiple times, and the opposition is worried that the coalition government will not be able to come to an agreement regarding the content of the climate report, TV 2 reports.

Solheim does not hide the fact that there are "split views in the political system" on what kind of politics the climate report should include.

"It is time consuming because it encompasses all aspects of the Norwegian society, from the individuals’ use of private vehicles, to the oil, industry and transportation politics for decades to come," Solheim told NRK.

Young Friends of the Earth Norway, an environmentalist youth organization, is concerned that the government is extending the nation’s climate responsibilities. They emphasize the importance of June’s report to be ambitious, and that it should present concrete measures for how emissions in Norway can be reduced.

Meanwhile, the Progress Party thinks that the delays may be a sign that other government representatives disagree with Solheim, and hope that the lengthy discussions will lead to a new climate policy, closer to the Progress Party’s point of view.
