Svalbard expedition ends

The British expedition to Svalbard, in which a 17-year-old student was killed and four seriously injured by a polar bear on Friday, is to end early, and the group will be re-patriated to the UK.

CEO of the British Schools Exploring Society (BSES), Peter Pearson, said that after consultation with the police and local authorities, the BSES felt it would be wrong to continue the expedition following the tragic death of one of its members.

The exedition consisting of a group of 80 people were on the trip which began on 23 July and was scheduled to run until 28 August.

The four persons injured in the attack are recovering in Norway after surgery.
