Stoltenberg meets with Angela Merkel

stoltenberg+merkelThe debt crisis was the focus of Jens Stoltenberg’s meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Wednesday.

Merkel had invited Stoltenberg to a working dinner at the German Parliament’s official residence, Schloss Meseberg, north of the German capital.
“The main focus of the meeting was the debt crisis in the Euro-zone. Germany and Merkel play one of the lead roles among the EU-countries to fight the crisis, and the development in Europe is critical for Norwegian companies and employment, Stoltenberg said after the meeting.
The Prime Minster stated that the meeting with his German colleague was very useful, and emphasized that Germany is one of Norway’s most important partners in Europe – both financially and politically.
“We discussed both international and bilateral questions,” Stoltenberg said. Energy access and safety was one of them, as well as Afghanistan and the upcoming Conference on Afghanistan in Bonn in Germany. We also talked about climate change and the UN Climate Change Conference in Durban, the Prime Minster explained.
This was the first meeting between Stoltenberg and Merkel since the terror attack on July 22. The chancellor expressed her sympathy and concern for the victims and their families.
