South Pole Expedition Behind Schedule
One of the Norwegian expeditions on its way across the Antarctic ice is behind schedule, and may not make it in time for the 100-year anniversary of Roald Amundsen’s arrival at the South Pole on December 14th. The expedition has had a slow start, and was already one week delayed before they reached their starting point due to poor weather conditions. Now, their biggest challenge is the lack of wind that was supposed to help pull them forward, using kite-like sails. - We are trudging along and longing for some wind that can help pull us ahead, the team stated on their blog.
Weather reports indicate that the wind will increase in the next few days, which would help them snow run their way to the Pole. Still, the expedition was 209 kilometers behind Amundsen's time table earlier this week, and will have to pick up the pace if they are going to reach the South Pole on time. The expedition consists of cross-country skier Vegard Ulvang, adventurer Stein P. Aasheim, polar historian Harald Dag Jølle, and director of the Norwegian Polar Institute, Jan Gunnar Winther. Their goal is to reach the South Pole on December 14, exactly 100 years after Roald Amundsen.
