Seamen opposed to arms against piracy
Several Norwegian shipowners have stated that they have already decided to hire armed security guards for their ships sailing off Somalia or in the Bay of Aden. Others are considering doing the same. However, the Seamen's Union fear that this will just increase the danger for Norwegian seamen. - Our opinion is that violence will lead to more violence. Arming the ships may just make the pirates use stronger measures, increasing the risks for the crews onboard the ships, says head of the Seamen's Union, Jaqueline Smith. Altogether 700 seamen are at present held hostage on more than 30 ships captured by pirates. Only two Norwegian vessels have so far been captured: "Bow Asir" in 2009 and "UBT Ocean" in 2010. (NRK)
