Parliament to investigate the Treholt case

In the latest development in the Treholt spy-case, the Norwegian Parliamentary Intelligence Oversight Committee (EOS-utvalget) on Wednesday decided to investigate the methods used by the Police Special Branch in its investigations into the case.

The background for the decision is the number of claims made in the media recently of irregularities used in the surveillance of former diplomat Arne Treholt.

Among other things it has been alleged that the police entered Treholt's apartment illegally, and according to an Aftenposten-source, planted a hidden microphone and a video camera which was used for an around-the-clock surveillance of Treholt and his family.

The EOS Committee is an oversight body appointed by the Norwegian Parliament, the Storting, to oversee intelligence, surveillance, and security service carried out by, or on behalf of, public authorities in order to safeguard national security interests.

The Committee is independent from the Storting, but reports back to the Storting every year by way of an annual report. The EOS Committee comprises seven members, and its current chair is Helga Hernes.

On Tuesday it was announced that the Norwegian Criminal Cases Review Commission (Gjenopptagelseskommisjonen) will this week decide whether or not there is basis for a review of the spy case against Treholt.  (See separate story)
