Number of traffic facilities record-low
"This is good news and shows that we are moving in the right direction. At the same time, 170 people are too many," Road Director Terje Moe Gustavsen told NRK. Then numbers speak for themselves; 170 traffic-related deaths are 38 fewer than in 2010. After reaching a peak in 1970 with 550 traffic fatalities, the numbers have been steadily decreasing for the past 40 years. The decrease in traffic fatalities can be explained by safer cars and more secured roads, people driving at slower speed, as well as seatbelts and other safety equipment. Gustavsen also emphasizes the police’s effort to better control extreme drivers, improved training for new drivers, as well as more efficient emergency care. "We believe that a focused approach to traffic controls and road safety campaigns targeted at specific groups have had significant effect," Gustavsen says. The administration is currently working on reducing drivers’ speed relative to the limits and road conditions, which has already resulted in drivers slowing down. More highways, and better marking of the roads, have also contributed to the decreasing numbers, says Gustavsen. This has been, and will continue to be a project between the Norwegian Public Roads Administration, the Police, and other groups and associations working on in the traffic safety, he explains. "The issue also has a strong political focus, both in Parliament and with the Ministry of Transports and Communications."
