Norwegians invent pocketsize ultrasound device
A new ultrasound device, invented by Norwegian researchers, small enough to fit in a doctor’s pocket has already helped save lives, and is being used at several hospitals across the country. "This device has helped detect other conditions than those patients were originally admitted for," explains heart specialist Håvard Dalen at the hospital in Levanger in the county of Nord-Trøndelag. The Faculty of Medicine at NTNU, a university in Trondheim, developed the ultrasound device. Because of its size and user ability, it makes it easier for doctors to perform ultrasound checks of patients that come in for examination. Normally, an ultrasound examination takes a lot more time because patients have to be transported to the equipment, not the other way around. "We use it all the time," Dalen explains. "All of our residents carry this around in their pocket and perform ultrasounds on a large number of new patients." The device is showing very good results so far, and several hospitals are already in the process of implementing it for use.
