Norwegian Tourist Attractions are Melting
The mild weather this year has not helped in slowing down the melting process. Out of a total of 33 glaciers, 28 have started to pull back significantly. "The changes are happening quickly, and we fear that this is just the beginning of what’s to come," Helge Drange, Climate Researcher at Bjerknessenteret for Climate Research in Bergen, told Aftenposten. The glaciers have never been this small, and several of them have decreased in size by between 40 and 60 meters. Between 2001 and 2011, twelve glaciers receded by 29 meters per year. The reduction this year is as big as the two past years combined. Drange thinks that climate change is the biggest contributor to the melting glaciers, and that a large number of Norway’s glaciers will vanish by the end of the century.
