Norwegian aircraft may monitor piratesNorwegian military Orion surveillance aircraft may be used in the NATO-led fight against piracy off the coast of Somalia and the Bay of Aden, according to the newspaper VG. These planes are normally patrolling the Norwegian waters off the coast of Northern Norway and in the Barents Sea. The Norwegian Defence Command confirms to VG that they are looking into the possibility of sending one or more of the Orion aircraft to the Bay of Aden. Most of the 40 naval vessels presently patrolling the waters off Somalia and in the Bay of Aden are under the command of the NATO Maritime Headquarters in London, assisted by several surveillance aircraft. Informasjonsoffiser Shana Lowe at the Allied Martime Command i Northwood i England says to VG Nett that Norwegian surveillance aircraft would be welcome. - Surveillance aircraft are able to cover large areas, and are able to give shipping presice information about the whereabouts of pirates, she says.
