Norway reacts strongly to Congo appeal court death sentence Norway has reacted strongly to the DR Congo military Appeals Court's decision to uphold the death sentence against the two Norwegians charged with murder, with spying for the Norwegian state and for the smuggling of weapons.
The Kisangani appeals court sentenced both men to death once again, and to pay large sums in compensation, and the two now plan to appeal directly to Congo's Supreme Court. Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre commented: - I react strongly to the new sentences in Kisangani, where two Norwegian citizens have again been sentenced to death. Norway oppose death sentences on principle, and I will as soon as possible again contact DR Congo's Foreign Minister to convey this message. - I will also strongly object to them being sentenced for spying for Norway. Norway is not a part in this case, Foreign Minister Støre said. Støre said the Norwegian ambassador to the Congo will meet with Congolese authorities in the capital Kinshasa, to deliver the same message, as well as a formal note. The same note will also be delivered to DR Congo's embassy in Stockholm, Støre said. (NRK/Press release) Rolleiv Solholm
