Norway asks Malawi to return aid funds

Norwegian authorities have asked Malawi to return NOK 21 million in aid funds, after the African state spent the money on a project different from the one agreed on, Vårt Land reports.

The amount is the highest demanded, after the Department of Foreign Affairs three years ago set up a control committee to prevent misuse of Norwegian aid funds.

- We want to transmit a distinct signal showing that we have zero tolerance for corruption and mismanagement of aid funds, says Minister of International Development, Erik Solheim.

In the case of Malawi, however, there was no question of corruption. Money left over from one project was used on another project which had not been agreed upon, and Malawi has agreed to return the money. Other projects with Malawi will not suffer.
