Norway and Russia to define common border Norway and Russia have agreed to set up a commission which will make a thorough examination and defining of the 196 km long borderline between the two countries. This was last done in 1947.
The boundary was first set in an agreement made between the two nations in 1826. About two thirds of the boundry follows the two rivers Pasvikelva and Grense Jakobselv, and in some places the river has has changed its course, something that may make it necessary to redefine the borderline in some places. The commission will begin its work in the field in 2010, and it hoped that its work will result in more accurate maps of the border region. - Clearly defined borders are important also between good neighbours. It is therefore to the good that this work will now begin, says Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Stoere. (Press release) Rolleiv Solholm
