New Rules Will Make it Easier to Incarcerate Refugees
“While preserving the refugees’ right to seek asylum, it’s well known that certain people abuse the system by committing crimes,” says Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg. “It’s not only a challenge for society, but it also threatens the entire asylum institute and people’s ability to seek asylum against severe human rights violations.” The current laws make it difficult to imprison refugees, and the acts committed are often not serious enough to give any other forms of punishment than fines and conditional jail time. The Government’s new law suggests that refugees seeking asylum that commit crimes in open drug environments will be placed in other designated areas of the country. If they fail to oblige by these rules, the new immigration law would make it possible to incarcerate the individual until the case has been processed. The new law would also make it easier to incarcerate a refugee that has committed criminal acts while there is an active process in place to have him or her deported.
