New report reveals long days at daycare

One in five children in Norway may spend more than 40 hours per week at daycare, according to a recent report by Statistics Norway (SSB). That’s more than an average workweek for adults.

In comparison, Norwegian adults can work a maximum of 40 hours per week. Through collective agreements the number has been lowered to 37,5 hours. The numbers have been collected from a new report on families with children and their care arrangements. In 2010, researchers mapped out how much time kids actually spend in daycare. The recent overview shows that the older the kids get, the more time they spend at daycare. The four-year-olds have the longest days, closely followed by the three-year-olds. A total of 85 percent of kids have an arrangement with their daycare that would allow them to stay there for more than 40 hours per week. The average for all Norwegian children is 35 hours per week. The numbers from SSB also show that a total 277,100 boys and girls have daycare spots.
