New record for plastic recycling
Norway broke the record for recycling plastic in 2011, collecting 10,000 tons more plastic than in 2008, a 60 percent increase in three years. A total of 26, 750 tons was collected nationwide. Grønt Punkt (Green Spot), the company that arranges plastic recycling in Norway, thinks the large increase is due to several municipalities arranging more collection points for their citizens, as well as the public’s general increased awareness of recycling. - Over the past three years we have almost doubled the environmental benefits that we get through recycling plastic, explains CEO of Grønt Punkt, Jaana Røine. "As a nation we can be very proud, as this puts us among the top plastic recycling countries in the world," she says. Numbers also show that the portion of the recycled plastic that is reused has increased from 58 percent to 80 percent in the same three-year period. (NRK) Julie Ryland
