New perspective on immigrants
SSB’s annual survey on the population’s attitude towards immigrants was conducted between July 4 and August 13.
17 percent of the interviews took place after July 22. That number is high enough to compare the answers given before and after the terror attacks, SSB states on their website. Prior to July 22, 73 percent of respondents agreed with the statement "Most immigrants help add a useful contribution to the Norwegian work force," compared to 85 percent in the days following July 22. Significant differences were found in three other statements related to how Norwegians perceive immigrants. The biggest percentage increase was noted in people’s answer the statement: "Most immigrants are a source for insecurity in society." Before the terror attacks 48 percent disagreed, while after July 22 that number had increased to 70 percent. The rest of the survey didn’t show any other major changes compared to last year. Nine out of ten think that immigrants should have the same work opportunities as Norwegians, and seven out of ten agree that immigrants from outside the Nordic countries help improve the economy. The views on whether or not Norway should make it harder for refugees and asylum seekers to stay are almost 50/50. 44 percent think it should become more difficult, while 45 percent think the rules and intake should stay the same. Only six percent think it should become easier. As in previous surveys, the answers fluctuate depending on age, sex and education. Women seem to be have friendlier attitudes towards immigrants than men, as do people who live in more populated areas. Those with higher levels of education also seem to be more positive than those with little or no education. (NRK) Julie Ryland
