New death sentence in Congo
Two Norwegians were Thursday sentenced to death in the Democratic Republic of Congo for the third time for killing their taxi driver, after losing their appeal for two earlier convictions. Joshua French, who holds joint British-Norwegian nationality, and Tjostolv Moland were also charged with attempted murder, armed robbery and the illegal possesion of arms. The two had also been accused of spying for Norway, but this charge was now dropped, and so was the demand that Norway pay a large sum in compensation for the spying. The earlier death sentences by a Congo military cpourt were overturned by the Congo Supreme Court in April, accepting defence arguments that procedures at their military tribunal hearing were flawed.
