Internment of asylum-seekers considered
In an interview with the newspaper Klassekampen, UDI director Ida Børresen, notes that such drastic actions will be reserved for applicants who have committed crimes in the country. The suggestion comes as a response to unrest and arson at two temporary immigration housing centres in Lier and Fagerli outside Oslo in early July. - We want a closed housing centre for asylum-seekers who have been denied asylum, and who have committed criminal acts. With these measures we hope to show that criminal behaviour will not pay off, Børresen says. UDI has submitted the proposal to the Department of Justice. The department has earlier stated that all those responsible for the unrest at Lier and Fagerli would be expelled from the country. Thus far four persons have already been sent back to Iraq. The Norwegian Directorate of Immigration (UDI) is now considering internment in isolation for asylum-seekers who have had their application for asylum to Norway turned down.
