Evacuees at Lyngseidet move back

Most of the 40 persons who were evacuated at the hamlet of Lyngseidet in Troms county, following Fridays major mud slide, have now been given permisiion to move back to their homes.

However, the 160 pupils at the local elementary school have been given Monday and Tuesday off, since the school building is located very close to the site of the slide.

Geologists say the site is safe, but the principal has decided to wait.

However, it is hoped that they will be able to go back to school on Wednesday.

Oil and Energy Minister Terje Riis Johansen will visit the area on Monday. His department has received strong criticism for the lack of preparedness in case of rock and mud slides in the region.

No one was seriously injured in Friday's mud slide, but one person had anarrow escape when his home was swept to sea. He was asleep on the upper floor when the slide came, and was able to climb to safety through the only window above the water level.
