Ethiopians seek church asylum
The Ethiopians demand that their applications be deaalt with on an individual basis, and not collectively. The say they will not leave the churc h before their demands are met. Some have reportedly also begun a hunger strike. - We have lived in Norway without any legal rights for several years. We have lost our work permits and tax cards, and have no income. That is why we are here now, said Bizualem Beza, spokesperson for the Association of Ethiopian Asylumseekers. The Norwegian immigration authorities, on the other hand, say their applications have been dealt with thoroughly, and on an indiviaual basis. The Ethiopians say they cannot return to their homeland, where they fear they will be persecuted because they will be regarded as political dissidents. Dean of the Oslo Cathedral, Olav Dag Hauge says he will on Tuesday meet with representatives for the municipality, the office for child care and the emergency clinic, to discuss how the situation should best be handled.
