Easing of trade restrictions with Myanmar

“This is a signal that Norway recognises the political reforms in Myanmar and hopes to see further democratic developments,” said Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

The easing of trade restrictions was announced to the authorities in Myanmar during Mr Støre’s visit last week. It will mean that Myanmar, which is a member of the group of least developed countries, will be able to export food and textiles duty-free to Norway.

“Trade between our countries is very limited, and it will probably take some time before we see the economic effects of this decision. Nevertheless, it has been important for us to announce this decision at an early stage. This will give sectors that provide work for the poorest and for a large number of women the opportunity of exporting their goods. I hope other countries will follow our example,” said Mr Støre.

The former call on Norwegian companies to refrain from trade with and investment in Myanmar has already been withdrawn. 

“In a situation where we are making it possible for Norwegian companies to become engaged in Myanmar, it is important to enable the country to trade with us on the same conditions as other least developed countries,” Foreign Minister Støre said.
