Disability Insurance and Pension Fund Increases

The Government suggests that disability insurance should constitue 66 percent of people’s previous income, and that pension plan benefits should be increased by 3.94 percent.

Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg and Hanne Burstrøm, Minister of Labor, presented their suggestions for increased disability insurance and pension plan benefits today. The main reason for the increase is to ensure that disabled people will have improved financial security, and more freedom when it comes to combining disability insurance, work and pension payments.

”We want fewer people to be fully unable to work, and make it easier for these individuals to use the work capacity that they have,” says Stoltenberg.

The new base amount will increase to NOK 79.216. The Government emphasizes that the disability insurance should be a long-term and secure income, but will be taxed as regular income. People currently receiving disability insurance will not be affected to a large degree, as their gross payments will be increased to compensate for taxes paid.

The new rules will take effect in 2015.
