Demand amnesty for illegal immigrants

Norwegian People's Aid (Norsk Folkehjelp) and several other non-governmental organisations now demand a general amnesty for the 18,000 immigrants who are staying illegally in Norway.

Several other European countries have granted such an amnesty to large groups of so-called paperless asylum seekers.

EU nations granted amnesty to three million paperless immigrants from 1996 to 2007, Aftenposten reports.

Secretary General of the Norwegian People's Aid, Petter Eide, says Norway ought to do the same. He suggests that for example adults and children who have been in Norway for four or five years, should be granted permanent residence in Norway.

- In this way we would be able to reduce work in the black economy, and the crime rate would drop, Eide says.
