Delayed Christmas shopping
Last week, Norwegians shopped for close to NOK 14,3 billion. This is an increase of more than NOK half a billion compared to the same week last year, according to sales statistics from 170 malls across the country, collected in a survey conducted by Kvarud Analysis for Virke – the Federation of Norwegian Enterprises. People started the Christmas shopping late this year, but it looks like the numbers are on track with regard to our prognosis of a three percent increase, explains chief economist in Virke, Lars Haartveit. Poor weather conditions made for a slow start to the Christmas season for the clothing and shoe industry, but in week 50 things turned and the industry experienced a 7 percent sales increase compared to last year. Interior and furniture stores have had an increase in sales of eight percent, and grocery stores saw a two-percent rise. Still, the biggest winner this year seems to be online shopping. Sales online increased twice as much in the holiday season as they did in regular stores. Online stores had revenues of NOK 3,1 billion in November and December, a sales increase of approximately six percent compared to last year.
