Customs want to body scan passengers
Norwegian customs want to introduce body scanners at all airports in Norway in an attempt to catch more drug traffickers. Customs are increasingly concerned about so-called internal carriers, when smugglers hide drugs inside their body, or swallow illegal drugs. Detection dogs can detect drugs that are hidden in luggage or attached to the body, but drugs hidden inside the body are impossible to locate. Customs therefore wish to introduce body scanners in Norway, according TV2. "We would like mobile units that use ultrasound to detect whether people are carrying something internally," says Bjørn Røse, Director General of Customs and Excise. According to Røse, these units will require fewer resources than the types of inspection used today, which require medical and police assistance. Customs have already asked the government to approve the new body scanners, and Røse says they hope to start using the new equipment some time in 2012. Similar units are already being used in the Netherlands and the U.K., but the E.U. Commission has stopped all test projects that use the machines within the E.U. while waiting for a report regarding the machines’ potential cancer risks.
