Concern over Russian nuclear power plants

Norwegian authorities have expressed concern over a new report by the Russian state nuclear agency Rosatom, which documents grave defects in the security of the country's nuclear power plants.

According to NRK, the report shows that the Russian power plants are not well prepared if Russia should be hit by a natural disaster like the tsunami which hit Japan recently. It also shows that some of the nuclear plants close to the Norwegian border are among the most dangerous.

Several Norwegian experts describe the report as "disturbing". - The report reveals deficiencies which have never before been mentioned publicly, nor reported internationally, says chief engineer Ole Reistad of the Norwegian Institute for Energy Technology (IFI).

The report has so far not been received by the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority, nor by the Department of Foreign Affairs (UD).

- I expect that the report will be presented at the summit meeting of the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) in Vienna on Monday, says UD State Secretary Erik Lahnstein.
