Christmas shopping online

Last week the Norwegian retail industry feared that they would see the first decline in Christmas sales in 23 years. Turns out, Norwegians were simply doing their Christmas shopping online.

When the shipping deadline for Christmas packages passed on Friday, the Norwegian Postal service concluded that the volume of shipments had increased by 20 percent compared to last year.

At first it seemed like Norwegians had tried to limit their spending this year, possibly due to the economic crisis in Europe, but based on the postal service’s numbers so far this year, it seems that people’s purchases have simply moved from stores to the web.

Electronics are most popular online, Hilde Ebeltoft-Skaugrud, press manager in the Norwegian postal service, tells Aftenposten. However, there are an increasing number of packages coming from more "female-friendly" stores, she explains.

The large increase in purchases made online will also help offset the postal services’ losses the past few years. People are sending fewer letters, which has resulted in a significant decrease in revenue. Online shopping and parcels will give Norway Post an opportunity to stand on their own feet again, Skaugrud explains.

The Norwegian Postal Service's shipping deadline for Christmas parcels passed on Friday. An average of 8,000 packages per hour had then been processed through the goods terminal per hour, or an average of 200,000 per day.
