Arctic Frontiers 2011 meet in Tromsø
The 2011 conference will mark the 5th anniversary of Arctic Frontiers. Since the establishment of the annual, international meeting, Arctic Frontiers has sought to provide a better understanding of the arctic region within a pan-arctic perspective, and to promote sustainability based on scientific knowledge, accounting for cultural sensitivity and cooperation across borders. - We see an increased interest in the Arctic. Countries like China, Japan and South Korea are showing increasing engagement in Arctic affairs. This is a development I very much welcome. Because only through cooperation and joint action can we ensure sustainable development of this region, Foreign Minister Støre said in his speech. The 5th Arctic Frontiers conference will address the concept of tipping points as it applies to social, economic, and ecological systems. Additional focus will be on how research can support and guide sustainable development and resource management in the High North. Confirmed speakers for the policy section of Arctic Frontiers include: Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre; Finnish Secretary of State, Pertti Torstila; Norwegian Minister of Fisheries and Coastal Affairs, Lisbeth Berg-Hansen; Rear Admiral and Oceanographer of the US Navy, Dave Titley; and Carlos Duarte, Professor in marine ecology, Spain. The conference program states: True to its name and mandate, Arctic Frontiers seeks to build new partnerships across sectors and disciplines. Arctic Frontiers has a partnership with the Northern Lights Festival, an annual international arts festival also held in Tromsø. Every year participants of the Arctic Frontiers conference get the opportunity to experience musical excerpts from the Northern Lights Festival programme. Arctic Frontiers is also showcasing the PolArt exhibition, a unique collaboration between the Arctic marine scientific network ARCTOS, Troms County Culture Centre and Tromsø Art Gallery. PolArt highlights the bond between art and science.
