Afghanistan summit in Oslo
Top diplomats from around 20 nations will meet at a hotel in Oslo Friday morning, the newspaper Bergens Tidende reports. In addition to all countries bordering Afghanistan, the permanent members of the UN Security Council: France, China, Great Britain and the US are invited. The paper says the summit is the result of a prolonged and intense Norwegian diplomatic effort. There have been preliminary meetings in Dubai, Oslo and Istanbul. Norwegian Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre says the aim of the summit is to work towards achieving a joint platform for regional cooperation between Afghanistan and its neighbouring countries. - Norway is very familiar with the political situation in Kabul, and at the same time we ourselves do not have any regional interests. This means we are well suited to play the role of mediators, the Norwegian Foreign Minister says.
