A German couple perished on the Norwegian glacier Nigardsbreen in Sogn on Sunday, when they were hit by falling blocks of ice. Their two young children survived the tragic accident.
The family had been part of a sightseeing group which visited the glacier, but when the guided tour was over, they apparently went off on their own, crossed the warning barrier and went up to the glacier, which then calved. The two adults were killed by the falling ice.
The two children, 8 and 10, were taken care of by the municipal care team, and will be picked up by German relatives on Monday.
The local authorities say the safe zone in front of the glacier is well marked, and signs in several languages warn against leaving the safe area.
