Tourists travelling with Norwegian Hurtigruten's cruiseliner "Fram" can now add an overnight stay among penguins in the Antarctic as part of their itinerary.
The Norwegian Polar Institute has given their permission, and in only a few days, the first tourists will stay in tents surrounded by the mighty and ice cold nature, penguins and lots of fresh air.
"Fram" is a ship specifically designed for expeditions in the Antarctic, and has been used by the cruise line Hurtigruta in excursions from the south point of Argentina and to the Antarctic Peninsula since 2007.
This year's season has just started, and 250 passengers will soon enter the ice-covered continent after a 50-hour journey. "Our guests want more than good views and simply leaving the boat," says advisor Stein Lillebo at Hurtigruten.
Already, the cruise line offers ice bathing and seminars, but the tourists want more, according to Lillebo. This year's addition to the program is named "Amundsen night," which refers to the Norwegian explorer's efforts to conquer the cold and large continent.
Although the Norwegian Polar Institute has approved the rather unusual camping ground, nature still comes first. "We follow all the rules, and make sure that wildlife and nature is protected," says Lillebo. "Penguins have the right of way."
