Queen Sonja and King Harald speak out about July 22nd

In the second part of a TV documentary about Crown Princess Mette-Marit that airs this Sunday on NRK, The King and Queen talk about their personal reactions after July 22nd.

”It was a big shock. I also almost felt angry,” Queen Sonja says in the documentary. This is the first time the Queen shares her feelings about how she experienced July 22nd and the days that followed in NRK’s documentary about Crown Princess Mette-Marit. When the terror attacks happened, King Harald and Queen Sonja were at their daughter, Martha Louise,’s cottage. The Crown Prince and Crown Princess were at their own, separate cottage outside of Kristiansand. On July 23, Crown Prince Haakon met his parents in Sandvika, and together they went to Sundvollen Hotel, where the victims and their families and friends were gathered.  ”I don’t think I have ever hugged that many people that I don’t know,” Kong Harald says. The Royal couple and the Crown Prince spent their time at Sundvollen talking to people and listening to their stories.  ”We tried to help out where we felt that it was important, and that it was the right thing to do,” the Queen says. It is sometimes difficult to find the balance between doing too much or too little, she adds. Crown Princess Mette Marit also came to Oslo the day after the attacks, and took their children to the Cathedral, where they lit candles by the alter.
Both the King and the Queen speak highly of their daughter-in-law in the documentary, especially her interactions with people. ”She is incredibly good at connecting with people, that is something that I envy in her. I am much more reserved,” says King Harald. The full interview can be seen in part two of the documentary NRK has made about Crown Princess Mette-Marit, which airs Sunday November 27.
