Norway to maintain bank guarantees

The finance committee of the European Parliament has accepted that Norway may continue its policy of higher guarantees than the EU for bank customers' deposits, NRK reports.

Norwegian banks have to guarantee for customers' accounts for up to NOK two million per deposit.

In the EU the bank guarantee is limited to NOK 800,000 per deposit.

Finance Minister Sigbjørn Johnsen has visited Brussels several times, presenting Norway's arguments for maintaining present policy, rather than reducing it to EU standards.
