Skjold Prime Consortium has been awarded a contract to build five 'Skjold' class missile torpedo boats (MTB) for the Norwegian Navy.
The contract is worth NOK 5.2 billion, including NOK 1.6 billion for the purchase of equipment from the Norwegian defence industry.The Skjold Prime Consortium is made up of the two Norwegian companies, the UMOE Mandal Yards and the Kongsberg Group, and the French Armaris Group.
The contract also includes completing a prototype of the new MTB, which has been under test since 1999, including the installation of complete weapons systems.
The Norwegian Defence Department says in a press release that the six new missile/torpedo boats, together with the older upgraded 'Hauk' class torpedo boats will become one of the main elements of the Naval Defence, and will be useful in protecting Norwgian supply lines and oil installations along the Norwegian coast.
The vessels will also be able to carry out operations under NATO command, or operate as part of other multinational forces.
The new MTBs, with a top speed of 60 knots, will be delivered in the period 2006-2009, and will become operative from 2009.
