Bans unhealthy food ads directed at children

The marketing of unhealthy food products directed at children less than 16 years old will become illegal in Norway.

Last year, The Ministry of Health and Care Services warned that they would tighten the regulations that control the marketing of unhealthy food products towards children.

The ministry's suggestions sparked several negative reactions from the food and beverage industry, especially its proposal to ban the advertising of unhealthy food directed at children and youth under the age of 18.

The industry's largest concern was that the restriction would in effect mean a complete ban. The Ministry of Health and Care Services and the industry have now reached a compromise, which includes lowering the age limit from 18 to 16 years old.

This means that all marketing directed at children less than 16 years of age will be considered illegal, but it does not include the production of the products, or their placement and store displays, explains State Secretary of the Ministry of Health, Nina Tangnæs Grønvold.
