The UN has requested that Norwegian police officers help with a future peacekeeping project in Syria.
The UN asked the police council of the Norwegian mission to the UN if a group of police officers can assist in a potential future peacekeeping mission in Syria. Such an operation will not be implemented until the country is at peace, but the UN has already started their preparatory work.
Acting press officer in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Svein Atle Michelsen, confirms that the UN has requested their support, but says that it is too early to say what Norway would be able to contribute with, and what their specific needs are.
Norway has already been part of the UN's mission in Syria. Major General Robert Moods lead the UN's group of unarmed soldiers there last year, as well as a team of four observers in the area.
A small group of 15-20 member countries have been asked by the UN to participate in the possible peacekeeping project. The purpose is to gain an overview of what the different countries will be able to offer.
