Government raises ban on airline bonus points

SAS EurobonusThe government has decided to raise the ban from 2007 on collecting bonus points on domestic flights.

"The government now thinks it is important to raise the ban on bonus points and rather go back to some of the typical measures used in the Norwegian Competition Act," says Rigmor Aasrud, Minister of Government Administration and Church Affairs.

The minister says that they will evaluate their use of measures depending on the development in the market. Bonus points on domestic flights were used by airlines such as SAS before 2007, and the airline has fought to be able to reintroduce their program Eurobonus on flights within Norway.

"11 years of no bonuses in the domestic airline industry has worked. The ban on bonuses has been important to secure the establishment of more than one airline in Norway, and to maintain competition within the aviation industry," Aasrud says in a press release.

The Norwegian Competition Authority says that they do not want to comment until after the weekend. However, their press release does indicate that they will be following the market closely, and will consider introducing a duty of disclosure for airlines and their use of bonus programs.
