The unemployment rate among immigrants is still three times as high as for Norwegians.
Finding work in Norway is challenging for immigrants, and many of them check out of the workforce and register for welfare.
"Several of them face incredible barriers. They write CVs, call on job listings, apply, but get nothing, says Bashe Musse, who works with the integration of immigrants to Norway.
Musse explains that Somalis are mostly concerned with health, education for their children, the Norwegian welfare system and pension when they arrive in Norway.
He refers to the life expectancy in Somalia, which is 46-49 years for men and 53 years for women. Most Pakistanis or Somalis in their 60s are retired, which may help explain why few of them want to work after a certain age.
"The Norwegian identity is so closely connected to their work," says Musse. Many immigrants, and especially women, have never had a regular job.
Several immigrants also doubt the value of working. After taxes are paid, the difference people what people get paid in unemployment aid and a low paid job is not that big.
"So what do you do? Sleep and receive NOK 10,000 - frankly said - or work, pay taxes and still only receive NOK 10,000?" says Musse. He explains that few immigrants value the social network a job offers, friends, colleagues and pension points.
