A recent report shows no more cases of suicide or cancer among Norwegian war veterans who served in Afghanistan and Kosovo, than in the general population.
Head of the Norwegian Defense's health department, Major General John Maxfield Steineger, delivered the findings from the study about the health of Norwegian war veterans to Defense Minister Anne-Grete Strøm-Erichsen at Akershus Fortress on Monday.
The findings show that troops in the Norwegian Defense have normal health in the areas that have been studied, according to project manager and chief doctor Einar Kristian Borud.
The report is the first overview of the army's state of health created by using the Norwegian Defense's medical information system. From now on the reports will be released annually.
This year's report specifically looked at cases of cancer among war veterans who served in Kosovo, and the cases of suicide among veterans who served in Afghanistan, as well as other general health data.
The findings showed no higher rate of either suicide or cancer among the veterans compared to the general population.
"This report indicates that the as a discipline of authority, we do not have to exercise additional measures in this area right now," Steineger concludes.
