Norwegians want a ban on begging

Following a lengthy debate in the media, and across party lines, six out of ten Norwegians now want a ban on begging, according to a poll made for the newspaper Klassekampen.

The poll shows that 31 per cent of those asked say they are against such a ban, while the rest say they haave not made up their mind, tyhe paper writes.

Bothe the Conservative Party (Høyre) and the right wing Progress Party (FrP), as well as the Agrarian Party (SP) have proposed a ban against begging.

This weekend, the Justice Minister Grete Faremo (Labour) said the Government does not want to introduce a ban. Instead it wants to change the Police Act, leaving it to the municipalities to regulate time and place for begging.
