The Band and Drill team of the Norwegian King’s Guard will perform at Stoddert Elementary School in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, April 30.
The performance, at 2:00 p.m. is a highly choreographed display of precise marching and riflery, and will be open to the press and the general public.
An embassy press release states that this is a rare opportunity to see a foreign country’s precision drill team performing at a U.S. elementary school. All 120 members of the King’s Guard will perform in full dress uniform. The presentation is visually stunning and should provide excellent opportunities to capture striking photos and video.
His Majesty the King’s Guard is a battalion of the Norwegian army. It serves as the bodyguards for King Harald V, guarding the royal residences, and is also the main infantry unit responsible for the defense of Oslo.
The changing of the guard ceremony at the Royal Palace in Oslo is a popular daily tourist attraction; the event at Stoddert Elementary provides a rare opportunity to see the King’s Guard in action outside of Norway.
The King’s Guard is in the Washington, D.C. area because of its participation in the Virginia International Tattoo in Norfolk, Va., April 25-27. A tattoo is a type of military musical display.
In 2013, the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Washington, D.C. has partnered with Stoddert Elementary for several activities as part of the Embassy Adoption Program, in which an embassy representative, a teacher and an elementary school class embark on a yearlong adventure, exploring their adopted country’s history, culture, government, arts, food, geography and much more.
