Russians and Norwegians collaborate on border control

borderpatrolFor the first time, Norwegian police joined a Russian police border patrol, a collaboration that would have been unthinkable only a few years ago.

Norwegian police officers took part in a Russian border control on the Russian side of the border last week. Head of the Kirkenes police station in Finnmark county, Hans Møllebakken, describes it as a big step forward.

"I only hope that it will continue to develop like this," Møllebakken tells NRK. He thinks that the collaboration would be a great advantage for the officers, who can exchange experiences and work together as a team.

Although the mission may not seem so significant, with only a few people involved, cooperation between Norwegian police and the Russian police have not been possible before, this close to the border.

"It doesn't happen every day that we step onto Russian ground and get to be part of the Russian border police's patrol routines," explains border police office Ulf Mathisen.

"This shows that we continue to improve the cooperation between Norway and Russia," he concludes.
